Prepare for a CAT ET 3 Diagnostic Session

CAT ET 3 diagnostic workflow from machine identification and adapter connection to ECM data review and repair verification

Proper preparation reduces avoidable communication problems and protects useful diagnostic information.

Step 1: Identify the Machine

Record the machine model, serial number or product identification, engine model, and any available ECM information.

These details help determine whether the selected adapter, Software, and cable configuration are appropriate for the intended application.

Step 2: Check the Computer and Software

Confirm that the computer meets the selected software package’s requirements.

Check the operating system, available storage, memory, required drivers, and installation instructions. Don’t assume every software version works on every Windows computer.

If the package includes remote installation or activation assistance, confirm the applicable conditions with the supplier before starting.

Step 3: Inspect the Adapter and Cables

Check the communication adapter, USB cable, machine-side cable, and connectors for damage or loose connections.

Choose the correct cable for the diagnostic port. If the adapter supports both wired and Wi-Fi connections, follow the instructions for the supplied hardware.

Step 4: Connect to the Machine

Place the machine in a safe condition and follow the equipment’s instructions to connect the diagnostic hardware.

Connect the adapter to the computer and the correct machine diagnostic port. Set the ignition or machine power state as required by the applicable service procedure.

Do not disconnect the adapter or interrupt an active diagnostic operation.

Step 5: Establish ECM Communication

Open CAT ET and follow the relevant connection procedure.

Confirm that the Software detects the communication interface and identifies the expected ECM. A successful computer-to-adapter connection does not necessarily mean that the adapter can communicate with the machine’s electronic systems.

If communication fails, check the cable, connector, driver installation, selected interface, machine power state, and the Software’s compatibility with the target ECM.

Step 6: Record Diagnostic Information

Start by reviewing the available active and logged codes and relevant event information.

Next, monitor parameters associated with the reported symptom. Run supported diagnostic tests only after confirming their prerequisites and following the applicable service instructions.

Save useful reports and data before making changes.

Step 7: Verify the Repair

After completing the repair, repeat the relevant diagnostic checks under appropriate operating conditions.

Confirm the original symptom is resolved and that no unexpected faults have appeared. Document any remaining codes or conditions that require further investigation.

For programming or other operations that modify ECM software or configuration, use the specified power supply and connection requirements, and do not interrupt the operation.
